*Volunteers' Week is 1 - 7 Jun 2009 and Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all our fantastic volunteers who rattle tins, organise events such as the Bikeathons, Forget Me Not Walks, as well as endless raffles, dinners and helping out in Head Office.

So many of you have shown such dedication over the years and it’s thanks to you that Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is able to fund world class research which is leading to better treatments for all blood cancers.

Mark Rowlands*One volunteer who has been singled out is Mark Rowlands. Mark first became involved with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research in 1997 following being diagnosed with terminal chronic myeloid leukaemia. His family, friends & neighbours wanted to ‘do something to help so along with three other patients Mark and his family did some fundraising & raised £1000.00!

Mark soon formed his own Branch - Merthyr Tydfil & District - and has been fundraising and raising awareness for us ever since.

Mark and the Branch hold regular dances, fairs, raffles, golf days, town centre collections, store collections and a few of his members who often go on coach holidays even take different fancy dress outfits with them to cheer everyone up & of course make a collection too!

This June Mark is incredibly proud to be celebrating raising £150,000 to date for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Fiona
"I love being a volunteer because I am following in the footsteps of people who did the same years ago as a result of which the research saved my life. I hope my small contribution can help bring about more life saving research."

Maria
"When Bill, my husband, was ill, I felt so frustrated and helpless. All I seemed to be able to do was watch and offer sympathy. Volunteering for me keeps Bill's memory alive but in an enjoyable and above all, a positive way. I don't sit and watch any more. I do things and they are worth doing!"
